All forms of thyroid autoimmunity typically start with T and B cells: Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. It occurs in about 0.3 - 5 people per 1,000 per year, and women are 15 - 20 times more likely than men to develop this disease.
Both genetic and environmental factors appear to play a role in its development.
One theory proposes that Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease (a form of hyperthyroidism) are caused by a similar immunologic dysfunction.
